- Martin Shanahan Added April 28, 2023★ ★ ★ ★ ★The parish priest of Scone Catholic Church also serves the community at Murrurundi further up the New England Highway and the small community to the east of Scone, Moonan Flat. The Scone Parish is one of the few in the Diocese to retain a Sunday evening Mass at 5 pm. Typically about 30 people attend this Mass. The former Parish Priest is currently on five months sabbatical leave, annual leave and long service leave. It is probable he will not return to the Scone Parish being appointed elsewhere in the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese. A supply priest is currently supporting the Scone, Murrurundi and Moonan Flat communities. St James at Muswellbrook (25 kms south of Scone, lost its Parish Priest in October 2019, he has been appointed to the Parish at Nelson Bay. So the Catholic Communities of Muswellbrook and Aberdeen are also being supported by a supply priest. The Diocese does not have an adequate number of priests over the Parish priest retirement age of 72 still fit and healthy enough to support parishes for sometimes many months while waiting for a replacement appo ointment of a parish priest.
